Flashback to 1980…I wanted a pair of slip-on Vans. My friend’s mom generously bought us a knock-off style, however, while the aesthetic was there, they didn’t…well…they just weren’t “real”. When I finally scored my first pair of “real” slip-on Vans months later, although I couldn’t put my finger on it, the “realness” was transcendent. I liken this to going to a CrossFit box for the first time. I had trained hard up to that point on my own – running, lifting, in bootcamp-style classes, followed along on Main Site and incorporated CrossFit movements into my workouts – but stepping into a “real” box for my first “real” WOD at PFC CrossFit…well, it got “real” real quick.
My passion for coaching at PFC CrossFit runs deep. I love seeing our athletes progress and PR and their successes drive me in my training. The thing I appreciate most about CrossFit is that there is something for everyone – gymnastics, weight lifting, running…body weight stuff, heavy loads…short, intense WODs or long grinder WODs. We all have a place to shine. My own training is focused on competing in powerlifting and I have learned so much about so many things on my journey thus far. As far as I have come, I have found a lot of un-greased grooves along the way. Working on progressions and accessory lifts and movements has made a big impact, not only on my training, but my coaching, too. I am a USPA Nevada State Record holder for Squat, Bench, and Deadlift (Raw – Master Women 40-44/60kg) and Bench (8/15/15 to 4/23/16 Raw – Open/60kg).
In addition to coaching WOD classes, I create Power Building and Skill Building workouts each week for Open Gym hours. It’s hard to find time to do some “extra” work, but it’s even harder if you have no idea what to do with that time when you do find it. If you are a newbie, this is an opportunity to build strength and confidence to help progress with PFC’s CrossFit programming. If you are on the varsity squad, these workouts can be the path to finding virtuosity – that’s straight up unicorn status, bro.
